What is Civic Improv?

Civic Improv is a home for improvisational theatre in southeast Michigan. We are a community of performers within the larger community of the Ann Arbor Civic Theatre.

We specialize in comedic improv, though when you come to see a Civic Improv show, you can expect to see a full range of emotions on display from our featured improv troupes.

The goal of any Civic Improv event is to create a one-of-a-kind theater-going experience that will never be repeated. No scripts, no costumes, no props. Simply a community of performers living in the moment.

Recurring Civic Improv Events

Open Improv Jams

We generally host an improv jam before any of our improv shows at the A2CT Studio.

An improv jam is open to anyone who wants to perform. You put your name on a sign-up sheet at the start of the event and our experienced Jam hosts will put you in a series of short-form improv games (think Whose Line Is It Anyway) and long-form improv sets (a series of interconnected scenes).

We encourage anyone looking to give improv a try to attend our Jams. They’re a low-pressure, supportive environment to try your hand at improv.

Not sure if you’re ready to give it a try? Come join the audience and laugh along with the performers.

Improv Shows

Come out and join us for an Evening of Improv! Each one of our shows features three improv troupes from around SE Michigan and beyond.

We traditionally feature long-form improv troupes, though anything is possible at a Civic Improv show.

Long-form improv can take many different forms. Each set runs 20-30 minutes. A group of performers will make up a series of scenes on the spot, based on a suggestion from the audience. Think of it like an improvised play or series of vignettes.
